Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
