The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
