A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
