EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
