Britain and America have hammered out a major trade agreement that will ensure zero tariffs on UK pharmaceutical exports being sold in the US market.

Key Provisions of the Pact

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has pledged to boost expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This pledge secures that tariffs on these vital exports will be held at nothing for a duration of the next three years.

This agreement follows recent warnings to significantly raise tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products, with increases floated reaching one hundred percent.

"This deal between the UK reinforces the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and brings long-overdue fairness to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a statement declared.

Trade Importance

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the Britain's most significant exports to the US, which is clearly the largest buyer for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data show that in the 12 months to the end of the third quarter, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products worth £11.1bn to the US. This value accounted for a significant portion of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This guarantee safeguards work, stimulates funding and sets the stage for the UK to emerge as a global hub for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary stated.

Detailed NHS Changes

The deal includes several notable pledges from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it deems new medicines to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to raise overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The percentage drug companies must refund to the NHS to control costs will be capped at 15%. Last year, refunds were more than twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact takes place against a long-running tension between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were intensified by arguments that American patients were charged significantly more for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several major pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or scrapped, while major investments have been pledged toward American operations.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS had to invest a greater share on drugs, noting that its expenditure on drugs had decreased as a proportion of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
